trinsy: (resurrection stone)
[personal profile] trinsy
So my mom finally finished Deathly Hallows and after discussing it with her, I never, ever want to be an adult!

First of all, she didn't cry when Dobby died, nor did she cry during the Resurrection Stone scene when Harry was going to his doom! Honestly, she has a heart of stone!

But then at the end she said that she liked Dumbledore all along! My sister was like, "You didn't think, even once, throughout the whole book, Gosh, Dumbledore's kind of a manipulative bastard." And my mom was like, "No," and my sister was like, "Not to Snape? Not to Harry?" And my mom said, "He was using Snape's remorse for the greater good." And we were like, "He raised Harry to let him die! You don't think that made him kind of a bastard?" and my mom said, "No, he was doing that for the greater good." And I said, "You sound like Gellert Grindelwald," and she said, "When you're a parent, you'll understand." So now, of course, my entire childhood is tainted, and I'm examining it to see if my mom has been manipulating my life in the name of the greater good.

Then, later, she brought up the book again, and was like, "I liked how the end was just another way to say They all lived happily ever after, because they did all live happily ever after since no one important died." And my sister and I were like, "WTF, Lupin, Tonks, Fred, Dobby!" And my mom was like, "Oh, who cares about Lupin and Tonks, they weren't important characters." And we were like, "We care!" And I said, "FRED! Fred was an important character, and he's dead, and I care, and all is not well if Fred is dead!" And she said, "Gosh, girls, they're just books!"

NO THEY ARE NOT JUST FUCKING BOOKS, MOTHER!

Seriously, I don't understand how she could have lived with me for the past seven years and think that the Harry Potter series is "just books". If she thinks they're "just books" she doesn't understand me at all! And you know, it's not just Harry Potter. Peter Rabbit isn't just a book. Anne of Green Gables isn't just a book. The Chronicles of Narnia aren't just books. The Lord of the Rings aren't just books. Any book worth reading isn't just a book!

But Harry Potter really is more than that. Harry Potter represents the in between for me, that limbo between being a child and being an adult, just as Peter Rabbit is my babyhood, and Narnia my childhood. It's like, if she thinks Harry Potter should just be books to me, she's completely missed what I am and what I've been since I was eleven years old!

On a related note, anyone distressed about Fred's death should definitely read this fic: Mischief Managed. The prequel about Snape is good too, but I've pretty much decided that this is what happened to the twins.

ETA: My mom also likened Dumbledore to God.  Somewhere in heaven, God is very insulted.
