So, I finally got a chance to watch the first Eleven episode and I LOVED it! I mean, Ten will always be MY Doctor, but I adored Eleven. I think he has the perfect mix of Nine's cynicism ("It's your bedroom.") and Ten's boyish enthusiasm ("What have you got for me this time?"), with this added element that is uniquely Eleven. That's where I think they've done such a good job with him - you can see elements of the other Doctors, and yet he is uniquely this Doctor.
Amy: "Will that door hold it?"
Doctor: "Oh, yeah, yeah, course, it's an inter-dimensional multi-form from outer space, they're all terrified of wood!"
I think that line perfectly captures what I'm talking about, because it's a total mix of Nine's jack-ass-ness and Ten's smart-aleck-ness, and yet it's not something either of them would say. It's totally an Eleven line.
I know people have been bitching about Matt Smith, but he's totally the Doctor.
"Hello, I'm the Doctor. And basically ... run." He delivered that line in a Doctor and in an Eleven way, and that's what being the Doctor is all about. You can hear that line being said by all the other Doctors, yet none of them would say it the way Eleven says it, and everyone should watch that scene if they think Matt Smith isn't perfect for the role.
Also, I adore Amy Pond, in no small part because I think seven-year-old me would have reacted exactly the same way seven-year-old Amelia did if the TARDIS had crashed in my backyard. And I love that she made poor Rory dress up as the Doctor when they were kids. But I'm worried they're going to mistreat him, like Rose with Mickey, and I don't want to go through that again. Ah well, still, Amy Pond, ILU, and I'm looking forward to seeing your adventures with the Doctor.
Also, the series preview looks AMAZING. Moffat, I expect great things. I know you won't disappoint me.

There was the tiniest part of me that was worried I was going to be disappointed, because my expectations were SO HIGH, but I wasn't AT ALL. I felt like I did the first time I watched Girl in the Fireplace, where I wanted to go find a bunch of people and be all WATCH THIS WATCH THIS NOW IS IT NOT WONDROUS. BECAUSE IT WAS.
And omg, Eleven had so many great lines in this! But the 'Basically... run' -- that whole sequence (and the whole thing with the other Doctors! I LOVED THAT) was like one giant SUCK IT to all the people who have been naysaying Matt for the past 14 months, because he was perfect, perfectly the Doctor and perfectly Eleven.
And Amy FILLS ME WITH INDESCRIBABLE GLEE, in part for the reasons you mentioned, And I'm afraid too, for Rory, but hopefully Moffat will find a balance. (I was wondering this morning if that whole laptop thing with Jeff means he's going to be the new Mickey, in terms of being... the Tin Dog. And stuff. You know?)
