Thoughts on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part 2

  • Though I dread the number of H/D fics that are sure to crop up, I loved how Harry saved Draco in the RoR.  And I love that Narcissa saved Harry after King's Cross.
  • I never thought Dumbledore was going to end up being such a bastard!  Like you know all those fanfics out there about how Dumbledore was really a manipulative bastard orchestrating Harry's life for his own purposes?  WTF, those people were RIGHT?  I'm glad there was chapter thirty-five for him to redeem himself.
  • On the subject, I was totally anti Harry-the-Horcrux thing, but I liked the way she ended up handling it.  If Harry had died, that would have been so stupid!
  • Also, when Harry was like, "Try for some remorse," I was totally worried that she was just going to redeem Voldemort.  Which, in light of Spiderman 3, is something I'm very against.  Villains need to be eradicated, not redeemed!
  • Molly killed Bellatrix!  I was so going for Neville killing Bellatrix, but Neville's victory was actually so much better, killing Nagini!  And I loved that he got the sword from the Sorting Hat, proving that he's a true Gryffindor, because that just goes all the way back to Book One where Neville doesn't think he's worthy of Gryffindor!  Also, Neville's gran is made of awesome!  So is McGonagall, come to that.
  • Lily's letter to Sirius was amazing.  And Sirius's room.  And pretty much Sirius everything!  I loved that Sirius made a final appearance!  I was holding out for one (only I'd been thinking it would be through the mirror, not the stone, obviously).  I know I said it before, but that whole scene was amazing.
  • Aberforth = love!  I can't even begin to describe how much I loved him!  "It's a goat, idiot!"  Brilliant!
  • I found the epilogue kind of unsatisfying.  Like, who did Draco marry?  Did Harry, Ron, and Hermione go back and get their N.E.W.T.s?  What are their jobs?  Do they live near each other?  Who became the next headmaster/mistress of Hogwarts?  What does Teddy Lupin, at least a year out of Hogwarts, do now?  Did any of the other Weasleys marry?  How did/does George cope with losing Fred?  WHAT HAPPENED TO LUNA???  It kind of left a lot open to crapfic, in my opinion.
  • I still hate Fred being dead!  I don't think I'll ever really accept or get over it.  You know, I've never been in denial about an HP death before.  I was never one of those people who was convinced that Sirius was just hiding out behind the veil, or that Snape did a weird, green, nonverbal levitation spell on Dumbledore while saying, "Avada Kedavra!"  But even when Harry went into the Great Hall and saw Fred lying there with his family around him, I was so waiting for Fred to pop up and be like, "I was Stunned, you morons!  Stunned!"  And in my heart, I still believe that Fred was Stunned.  George can't be alone!  It's like - it's like - just - NO!
  • On a lighter and more hilarious note, when I first read the epilogue, and I got to part about Teddy snogging Victoire, I totally read it "Victor" and I was like, "Huh.  Maybe she's hinting that the Sirius/Remus people got it right after all."  But then James said, "He's snogging her!" and I was like, "Wait, that can't be right..." (keep in mind that it was 4:40 in the morning).  So I read through a few more times, but it wasn't until over two hours later, as I was lying awake in bed, that I realized that Victoire must be Bill and Fleur's daughter and that her name must be French!  (Seriously though, how the hell do you pronounce that name?)

I agree. The epilogue made me wish she'd just ended it at the last chapter (which was, by far, my absolute favorite ever). Seriously though. It was wayy too, "Happily ever after! Yay!"

I was disappointed with that.

I believe you pronounce it Vick-twa. Or some such way. Psht, I dunno. I don't take French.

PS: I never really accepted Sirius's death, so I vote we don't have to accept Fred's. -nods wisely-

Since this is the last book and George isn't mentioned in the epilogue, I think I'm just going to say that while Harry, Ron, and Hermione were in the headmaster's office, Fred came to and everyone had a good laugh about how Percy can't tell the difference between a Stunned person and a dead one. And then Fred and George never let him live it down that Scrimgeour was probably buried alive because Percy didn't realize he'd only been Stunned. And then the twins lived happily ever after running Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes together, making ear-related jokes, and being awesome uncles to Ron and Hermione's and Harry and Ginny's kids.

Wow. I just got so sad after writing that and realizing that none of it actually happened...
